Summer Walk — Film Locations

On 17th June, Jackie Husain took us on a walk from London Bridge Station, along the south bank of the Thames, to view some of the famous London locations frequently appearing in modern movies.

We set off down Borough High Street past the Grade I listed George Inn, the only surviving galleried coaching inn in London (near the site of the ancient White Hart and Tabard Inn, described in The Canterbury Tales, but which were demolished in the nineteenth century).

Cutting through to Red Cross Way, we visited the Gardens and Alms Houses established by social reformer, Octavia Hill in the 1880s. Heading back towards the river, we passed historic Cross Bones Graveyard, last resting place of many denied Christian burial from medieval times.

These included the "Winchester Geese", prostitutes licensed by the Bishop of Winchester. Today the graveyard gates have become a popular shrine to society's outcasts. Although there are no longer any green spaces in Park Street, it was once the site of a grand park around Winchester Palace, the ruins of which are still visible in Clink Street.

We took a detour through crowded Borough Market and made our way along the Thames, past the replica Golden Hind, the Globe and the Millenium Bridge, towards Blackfriars Station, pausing to admire St Paul's Cathedral across the river.
